What to include
A report is much easier to act on when it says:
- What you did, step by step.
- What you expected to happen.
- What happened instead.
- The website or kind of text box it happened in, if it was site-specific.
- Your Chrome version, and the Boltfill version from the settings page.
Please do not paste snippet contents, passwords, card numbers or other personal data into an issue. Issues are public. A short made-up example that reproduces the same problem is just as useful.
Reporting a security problem
Please do not open a public issue for a security vulnerability. Email plugins.dns@gmail.com with "Boltfill security" in the subject, and include what you found, how to reproduce it, and what an attacker could do with it.
Common questions
Where can I install Boltfill?
From the Chrome Web Store — search for Boltfill. The version available today is the free, local one: unlimited snippets on your own device, no account, and nothing sent anywhere.
I cannot find the sign-in or Pro options.
They are not in the published version yet. Accounts, cloud sync, folders, tags, history and Boltfill Pro all arrive with the 0.4 update, which is finished and waiting on Chrome Web Store review. Chrome will update the extension for you once it is approved. Nothing is on sale until then, so if a page appears to offer you Pro before that, it is not us.
Nothing expands when I type my shortcut.
Check three things: that Boltfill has been granted access to the site (open the popup and click Enable), that it is not paused in Settings, and that the site is not on your exclusion list. Boltfill also deliberately never expands in password, card number, CVV or one-time-code fields.
My shortcut only expands after I press space.
That happens when one shortcut is the beginning of another — with both
/th and /thanks saved, /th has to wait so that
/thanks stays typeable. A setting also switches everything to
wait-for-space if you prefer it that way.
Are my snippets synced between computers?
No. They are stored locally on each device and are not synced to your Google account. Use Settings → Backup to export them to a JSON file and import it elsewhere.
How do I get my data out, or delete it?
Settings → Backup → Export writes a plain JSON file to your computer. Settings → "Delete everything" removes all snippets and settings from the device, and uninstalling the extension removes its storage with it.
Which websites does it work on?
Boltfill works in ordinary form fields, textareas and rich text editors on sites you have granted access to. Compatibility with specific named sites is still being tested and is deliberately not claimed until it has been verified.
Can I stop it running on one particular site?
Yes. Settings → "Never run on these sites" excludes a site and its subdomains
entirely. Site owners can also mark a region of a page with
data-boltfill="off".
Privacy
Boltfill stores your snippets and settings locally on your device, sends nothing over the network, and collects no analytics. The full detail is in the privacy policy.
